In preparation for U-Con Gaming Convention 2022, we have posted the characters for the Cowboy Cthulhu: Winter of Malcontent event. These characters are all drawn from history and actually have no more than 2 degrees of separation from each other.
Mary Calkins was our favorite discovery in researching these characters. Her relationship with Dr. James is real, the only question is whether or not Teddy actually attended any classes by Dr. James while at Harvard. We are going to assume yes, in the interest of story, as it is certainly plausible.
Mary went on to become a voice of modern psychology. We highly encourage you to read about her accomplishments and life, and how she overcame the impediments created by the sexist policies in academia of the 19th century.
Dr. William James is quite a character as well, and advocated for Mary’s work at Harvard. The hints of his experimentation with drugs also works very well for the Mythos aesthetic.
Teddy and Seth are the most well-known of the bunch. We take a little creative license on the timing of their “neighborly relationship” (they had neighboring ranches), but it all works. If you want to get in the mood a little, you could watch a few episodes of Deadwood to get a feel for Seth’s character.
Lastly, Red Cloud. An amazing figure and leader in the tragic story of western expansion. Initially a war chief of unparalleled ability, he evolved into a man of peace, travelling to Washington more than once to advocate for coexistence. He is the spiritual anchor of the group.
This is one of the author’s favorite adventures to run. Game On!
